The 62nd annual dinner and prize giving of the BPL took place at Haggs Castle golf club on Friday 10 October 2008 when 112 were present including guest speakers. As tradition dictates the function was chaired by Robert Aird the Vice-Captain of Eastwood Golf Club (The Captain was unavailable) being the club which finished in bottom place in the league this year.
The principal speaker was James Robertson of Airdrie, the District Procurator Fiscal in Kirkcaldy, who entertained the assembled company with a very witty and humorous address. The prize giving part of the evening was handled by President Cameron Greer assisted by Vice President Peter Boyd. The Brand putter was accepted by John McArdle, Captain of Fereneze Golf Club, and suitably engraved plaques were presented to members of the winning team, namely Ian Ashcroft, Gordon Black, Peter Boyd, Mark Carlton, Jim Coleman, Ross Connolly, Ritchie Elrick, Tony McGorrian, Willie McGuire, Ian McMillan, Matthew Malpass, Gary Murray and Gordon Murray.
The “Golfer of the Year” trophy was awarded to Craig Watson of East Renfrewshire Golf Club who played in all eight matches winning seven games and recording a 90% winning record.
The “Wooden Spoon” was accepted by the Chairman on behalf of Eastwood Golf Club. The toast to “The Players” was given by Andrew Burnside the Captain of Cowglen Golf Club, the club finishing in middle position in the nine club league, again as tradition dictates.
The final toast of the evening being that to “The Chairman” was given by Stuart Christie of Williamwood Golf Club, the Chairman of the dinner in the previous year. In his closing remarks Robert Aird, the Chairman, thanked the speakers and all others who had combined to make the dinner a very enjoyable occasion and in particular thanked Haggs Castle Golf Club for providing the venue and the catering and bar staff for an excellent meal and service throughout the function.

Match News - the season finale - Thursday 3rd July

    Fereneze 5.5 Whitecraigs 2.5

This was a very close and exciting encounter between the two teams living up to its billing as the grand finale. The matches were played very sportingly and all the players were a credit to their respective clubs and the game of golf.
The top match was nip and tuck with Ritchie Elrick edging out Ian Binning by 2&1 with some excellent golf. Scott Herald of Whitecraigs in his last game as an amateur got the better of Willie McGuire by 2&1. Ian McMillan had a comfortable win against Scott Hall by 3&2. Ross Connolly edged out Jim Thompson by 2&1 with a birdie at the 17th. Gavin Hay of Whitecraigs the new West of Scotland boys champion beat Ryan McCaffrey 1up. Gary Murray had a comfortable win against Cameron Paul and just missed out on the player of the year award winning 7 of his 8 matches. With six games complete, Fereneze led 4 games to 2 and with Whitecraigs needing a draw to clinch the title, had to win the last two games. Gordon Black 1 up through 16 against Colin Bell and Mark Carlton also 1up through 16 against Gary Murphy. Gordon Black kept his unbeaten run in the league by finishing all square. Match of the evening was Mark Carlton’s win over Gary Murphy, Being 2 down after 2, Mark had 7 birdies in the next 14 holes to win by 2&1 and get Fereneze over the winning line. Many thanks to Annand Podder for his match report.
