The 62nd annual dinner and prize giving of the BPL took place at Haggs Castle golf club on Friday 10 October 2008 when 112 were present including guest speakers. As tradition dictates the function was chaired by Robert Aird the Vice-Captain of Eastwood Golf Club (The Captain was unavailable) being the club which finished in bottom place in the league this year. The principal speaker was James Robertson of Airdrie, the District Procurator Fiscal in Kirkcaldy, who entertained the assembled company with a very witty and humorous address. The prize giving part of the evening was handled by President Cameron Greer assisted by Vice President Peter Boyd. The Brand putter was accepted by John McArdle, Captain of Fereneze Golf Club, and suitably engraved plaques were presented to members of the winning team, namely Ian Ashcroft, Gordon Black, Peter Boyd, Mark Carlton, Jim Coleman, Ross Connolly, Ritchie Elrick, Tony McGorrian, Willie McGuire, Ian McMillan, Matthew Malpass, Gary Murray and Gordon Murray. The “Golfer of the Year” trophy was awarded to Craig Watson of East Renfrewshire Golf Club who played in all eight matches winning seven games and recording a 90% winning record. The “Wooden Spoon” was accepted by the Chairman on behalf of Eastwood Golf Club. The toast to “The Players” was given by Andrew Burnside the Captain of Cowglen Golf Club, the club finishing in middle position in the nine club league, again as tradition dictates. The final toast of the evening being that to “The Chairman” was given by Stuart Christie of Williamwood Golf Club, the Chairman of the dinner in the previous year. In his closing remarks Robert Aird, the Chairman, thanked the speakers and all others who had combined to make the dinner a very enjoyable occasion and in particular thanked Haggs Castle Golf Club for providing the venue and the catering and bar staff for an excellent meal and service throughout the function.
